Information on laminated log

Glued laminated log

Laminated log gives an emphatically modern surface for your log building, respecting tradition and making use of the latest production technology. From the wide log selection of Kontio you will find a suitable option for your purposes, depending on the use of the house and the surrounding climate conditions.

When it comes to breathability of the glued laminated log, Fraunhofer Wilhelm Klauditz Institute, Germany, has confirmed in a statement in 2002, that glued wooden materials with formaldehyde-free polyurethane glue are completely comparable to natural massive wood. Gluing inbetween the lamels is just as permeable as Goretex™ coating on a fabric.

Excellent characteristics as construction material

Laminated log makes an excellent construction material. Laminated log preserves the natural cell structure of wood, and settling and cracking are minimal.

The raw material of laminated log is pine log, sawn into suitable billets. The billets are dried, joined and planed. At the glueing stage the spaces between the billets are glued (1) , taking into account that the very enduring heart (2) is always on the outside. The billets are pressed together. After the glued joint has dried, the billets are ready to be planed into a log profile. Tailor-made logs are then machined out of the profile for each customer. Correct methods, good materials and modern technology enable a high-quality and durable product.

Tongue-and-groove log profile

A separate space has been cut in the log structure for insulation (3), keeping it protected from storms and rains. A drip edge (4) in the profile ensures that the recess keeps dry.

The dimensionally accurate locked corner joint (5) by Kontio as well as double insulation in the corner joint profile ensure a warm and tight corner solution. A tongue-and-groove type recess, which has been cut in the shape of the laminated log, ensures a tight construction with minimal settling, thanks to dimensional accuracy and recess width (6).

Quality at every step

Samples are taken from every glueing lot for quality control purposes. In addition to the strength of the adhesive joint, qualities tested include the moisture permeability of the adhesive joint, which ensures healthy and breathing indoor air. After gluing, the log billets are planed to profile. In the same context, a mild water-soluble wood protective liquid is sprayed onto log surface. It provides protection against possible weathering and moulding for the period of transportation and the starting phase of construction operations.
